The role of foreign toponyms in historical and contemporary branding practices and conspicuous consumption provide a record of emotional and commercial attachment between nations. Here, the accumulation of products sold by German companies to the domestic population named after geographic locations in the U.S. reflect an aspect of the former’s intercultural nostalgia for the latter. The work takes place, however, at the intersection of Fernweh and Heimweh as I (the artist) simultaneously pine for my native country and culture even as I decline to return to it. By utilizing components of interior decorating such as flooring, paint, and wallpaper, a material yet fragmentary reference to the domestic realm and subjectivity of “home” can be realized.
